Abstract

The excel spreadsheet files provide access to a functional Arc Flash Calculator that includes various equipment configurations (VCB, VCBB, HCB, VOA and HOA), Incident Energy and voltage ranges.

As equipment’s configuration and input fields are presented, the user will be able to key entry specific data using the proper input fields and/or pull down menus provided. All variables and constants are defined. When all variables inputs have been entered, and proper equipment configuration has been selected, the Calculator will solve the equations and the answer is returned.

The Calculator function within the spreadsheets provide quick access to data analysis that could increase the productivity for the user.

This xlsx file does not take reduced arcing current I_arc_min into account.

I_arc_min has an effect on tripping time of protection and can cause higher incident energy.

The second listed calculator named "IEEE ExcelCalculator_V 2.6.6_M_mm_08_29_2019.xlsm" is intended specifically for the reduced arcing current (I_arc_min) case. However, there are some errors in how the Incident Energy and Arc Flash Boundary equations have been translated into Excel formulae (which I have reported via the "Report a problem with this Dataset" link AND have included in a comment below as well), so I believe correct numbers will only be generated for LV equipment (i.e. < 0.6 kV) and not MV and HV cases at the present time.

I have entered the data inputs given in Annex D.1 of IEEE Std 1584-2018 (using an arc duration of 223ms given on page 64, which corresponds to the reduced arcing current) into the spreadsheet named "IEEE ExcelCalculator_V 2.6.6_M_mm_08_29_2019.xlsm". Unfortunately, this results in calculated Incident Energy and Arc Flash Boundary values which are higher than those given on pages 67 and 68. Incident Energy in the standard is 13.343 J/cm^2, whilst in the spreadsheet is 13.44 J/cm^2. Arc Flash Boundary in the standard is 1704mm, whilst in the spreadsheet is 1712.51mm. Having had a closer look at the equations in the standard, I strongly suspect that in the equations for E_600 (Eq. D.53), E_2700 (Eq. D.55) and E_14300 (Eq. D.57), the arcing current multiplied by the k3 coefficient is the full arcing current (Iarc_600, Iarc_2700, Iarc_14300) rather than the reduced arcing current (Iarc_600_min, Iarc_2700_min, Iarc_14300_min).
